Mangroves Initiative - Ecosystem Assessment
Published on

In August 2018, the first field visit to the Cuajiniquil and Térraba Sierpe sites was carried out. During this visit, the reference sites and the areas to be restored were identified, and the necessary field monitoring equipment was installed.
At the end of November and beginning of December 2018, the second visit to the Cuajiniquil and Térraba Sierpe sites was carried out in order to install sensors (Thalimedes) to determine the behaviour of the hydroperiod and the soil topography. At Térraba Sierpe, in particular, soil samples were collected in the restoration area. A visit was also made to the Pitahaya area to define a potential restoration site.

The first phases of the restoration work involve ecosystem assessment:
• Selection of restoration areas and a reference area to calibrate data
• Analysis of the environmental conditions of the restoration and reference areas
• Monitoring the physicochemical conditions of interstitial water
• Analysis of the physicochemical parameters of the sediment
• Analysis of forest structure and physiognomic types of reference forests
• Primary productivity (leaf litter production and phenological behaviour)
• Biomass and carbon in reference forests (quantification of carbon accumulated in the soil)
• Methane concentration in a forest dominated by Rhizophora mangle and in the restoration area.
