The main objective of the project was the monitoring and management of coastal risks in West Africa and the promotion of “soft solutions” for preventing and protecting against these risks, through the consolidation of a regional cooperation mechanism for generating and disseminating information and implementing pilot experiences.

The WACA project
Learn more about the RETCAO project, building on WACA
Launched in February 2026 in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Senegal and Togo, the RETCAO project builds on the recommendations made during the evaluation of the WACA project. It brings together key partners, including the Conservatoire du littoral, the World Bank and the PRCM, and aims to develop approaches that can be replicated across the region.
